Form of Past Continuous Tense

Subject + was/were + V.-ing

วิธีการสร้างประโยค Past Continuous Tense

โครงสร้าง	Subject + was/were + V.-ing
ประโยคบอกเล่า	I / He / She / It		was		speaking		with Tom
	You / We / They		were		reading		newspaper.
โครงสร้าง	Subject + was/were + not + V.-ing
ประโยคปฏิเสธ	I / He / She / It	was		not		speaking		With Tom.
	You / We / They	were		not		reading		newspaper.
โครงสร้าง	Was/Were + Subject + V.-ing?
ประโยคคำถาม	Was	I / he / she / it			speaking		With Tom?
	Were	you / we / they			reading		newspaper?
โครงสร้าง	Who/What/Where/When/Why/How + was/were + Subject + V.-ing?
ประโยคคำถาม Wh-	Who	was		I / he / she / it		speaking with?
	What	were		you / we / they		reading?

หลักการใช้ Past Continuous Tense

ใช้เพื่อกล่าวถึงเหตุการณ์หรือการกระทำที่ เกิดขึ้นในอดีต ในช่วงเวลาที่บ่งไว้อย่างชัดเจน เช่น

I was taking a shower at nine o’clock last night.
(ฉันกำลังอาบน้ำอยู่เมื่อวานตอนสามทุ่ม)

ใช้เพื่อกล่าวถึงเหตุการณ์สองเหตุการณ์ที่ เกิดขึ้นซ้อนกันในอดีต โดย…

เหตุการณ์แรกที่เกิดขึ้นและดำเนินอยู่ จะใช้ Past Continuous Tense

เหตุการณ์สั้นๆนั้นได้เข้ามาแทรก จะใช้ Past Simple Tense

เช่น I met your girlfriend in the park while I was jogging.
(ฉันเจอแฟนคุณในสวนตอนฉันกำลังวิ่งจ๊อกกิ้งอยู่)

ใช้เพื่อกล่าวถึงเหตุการณ์ที่ เกิดขึ้นควบคู่กันไป ณ เวลาเดียวกัน (Parallel Actions) โดย เหตุการณ์ทั้งสองเหตุการณ์จะใช้ Past Continuous Tense เช่น

I was sleeping while the movie was showing,
(ฉันนอนหลับขณะที่หนังกำลังฉายอยู่)

เรามักใช้คำว่า when, while, as ใน Past Continuous Tense เพื่อเชื่อมเหตุการณ์ ต่างๆเข้าด้วยกัน เช่น

As I was going to the temple, he was going to the sea.
(ขณะที่ฉันกำลังเดินทางไปที่วัด เขาก็กำลังไปทะเล)
